6th DPRM zeroes in on international migration and development
This September, the Philippine Institute for Development Studies once again takes the lead in celebrating the 6th Development Policy Research Month (DPRM) with the theme "Managing the Development Impact of International Migration". The choice of this theme highlights the significant role that international migration has played in the lives of many of our countrymen. It likewise underscores the need to link the study of international migration to the country`s development process and integrate it into the overall development program of the government. | | Rice and Philippine Politics
Using a political economy perspective, this paper establishes the strong relationship between rice and politics and explains recent developments in the Philippine rice landscape. Results of the analysis show that the price of rice has been a significant determinant in election results since the 1950s, with the exception of 1998, where despite stable prices, the presidential candidate from the incumbent administration failed to win the elections. | Human Capital and Development in the Philippines
After many policies over the years to uplift the welfare of the Filipinos, the overall human development in the country has not reached its maximum potential. Undoubtedly, much remains to be done especially in improving the quality of human capital in the Philippines. This volume, which is a festschrift in honor of Alejandro N. Herrin, reviews issues on human development with academic rigor and with an eye toward providing practical policy recommendations. |

The author says "yes" and explains why.
Ensuring a more Evidence-based Policy for Basic Education Can the Philippines achieve its goal on two key international commitments for the achievement of education for everyone? A closer look at the figures would show that the country may be at risk of not achieving its goal of attaining universal primary education by 2015. This Policy Notes explains why.
